Title: Veron Chipmunk
Post by: pedwards2932 on Jan 07, 2026, 08:45 PM
Has anyone built a Veron Chipmunk?  I got the plans from Outerzone.  I have all the parts cut and ready to start.  I am not thrilled with the front end/hub design.  It doesn't look like you could add down or side thrust without drilling the offset in the prop hub.  I am thinking of redesigning the from to allow for shim adjustment or maybe an adjustable hub.  Any ideas?

No, but like all of the Truflite stuff (and I have built many others in the range) you will need to make a removable nose block and alter the front end accordingly.  Phil Smiths former and stringer runs weren't always the best, so expect to make a number of mods, also check the decalage, some of the models in that range were set at zero-zero!

Good luck and as a fan of these models I look forward to seeing the fruits of your efforts...

I figured I was going to have to redesign the noseblock.  I added a pic of the cut parts.  I got the balsa from Amazon because I am building in a different state then where may balsa stash resides.  The balsa looks pretty good.  Came in 4 x 12 sheets since I have Prime no cost for the shipping.  I hope I don't run into issues with the stringer slots

I have build the Veron Chipmunk, also from the plans from Outerzone.
Also made a different nosehub than showed on plans:

I can adjust side and down thrust by shimming the nosehub

I`ve got build pictures at my website: deLooff Aeroplanes (https://www.delooff-aeroplanes.nl/free-flight-1/de-havilland-t-10-chipmunk-kit-scale)

Thanks so much for the info.  That nose piece is exactly what I was thinking to use.  The location of the prop hub is way up to the top of the former so I need to be careful to not weaken it too much. Thanks again.  Your model looks great.

Seeing these old Veron models always makes me go all woozy with nostalgia and want to start on one right away. Odd, since I only built a couple of flying models as a kid and was Airfix's No.1 customer (plus a bit of Revell, Heller, Frog . . .:)

The attachment of the wing looks a bit dodgy.  It has the center spar to attach.  I am assuming the wing attaches to the formers on at the second rib?  One other question I noticed you did a plunge form for the canopy instead of the canopy design in the plan.  Is this because the one in the plan is hard to assemble?

Nice job on the Chipmunk, good use of a different finish in a black theme.

Some time ago I built the Chipmunk from a Guillow kit. As laid out was a decent rubber powered flyer.

I also noticed that the pieces for the rubber motor anchor are forward one former.  Is this for CG?  Makes the rubber kinda short?
