Title: My "Drop Off" dolly gear
Post by: ilgk48 on Jan 28, 2026, 03:52 PM
Yes, I know that a "Drop Off" dolly is an old idea but ...
I like to build small C/L models, mostly profile models, for 1.5 - 1.7 cc (PAW 149, OS 10).
I fly them on grassy fields using a stooge for the takeoff (unless I have a hand-launching assistant).
So, I need the gear only for taking off from the stooge, but what about the gear when the model is in the air? Drop off, of course :-). As said, this is not a new idea, but I'd like to share the architecture (a big word ...) of the kind of drop-off gear I use for my little models: one gear, many models!
The photos are more explanatory, at least I hope so, than a my pathetic and convoluted attempt at a written explanation.
I only say that the gear pins are from bicycle spokes of 1.8mm diameter and on the model they fit (loosely, otherwise dropping is difficult) into brass tubes of 2mmm internal diameter. The pins can slide laterally giving a span in the range 10 - 25 mm.
Thanks for your attention.
