Title: Wire to drill bit sizing.
Post by: gravitywell on Feb 01, 2026, 02:16 AM
Hi fellas.  I have a bit of a conundrum and I hope that one of you can help me.  I am looking for a drill bit size (so I can buy one) for .047 and .032 wire.  I am absolutely lost when it comes to these oddball sizes.  I have never had to buy anything less than 1/16 before.  Any help would be appreciated.  I tried to get the information from McMaster-Carr, but they will not reply to my enquiry.

'Number or Gauge' or metric drills are what you want.

No: 67 is exactly 0.0320" but I suggest No: 66 (0.0330") would be better. Check your wire diameter before purchase. The next sizes are No: 65 which is 0.0350" and No: 64 is 0.0360".

3/64" is 0.0469" which is very likely too small. My experience with hobby shop wire is that it is usually larger than the nominated size. No: 55 (0.0520") is the next size greater than 0.047". For added clearance No: 54 is 0.0550" and No: 53 is 0.0595"

If you can get metric drills, 0.85 mm is 0.0335" and 0.90 mm is 0.0354".

1.25 mm is 0.0492" and 1.3 mm is 0.0512"

Hope that helps

Paul
