Hello everybody,

as the thread title says, I am looking for plans for a relatively simple F1N model made primarily of balsa (no foam parts).

It does not have to be a top competition model, I am more interested in ease of construction and a respectable flying ability.

Any ideas?

Hi George,

I found this very simple glider in the book Balsa Flying Models by Bill Dean. It would probably need to be modified for lower weight — using thinner and lighter balsa — and reinforced with carbon rods to make it suitable for our purposes.

Hi Markus, this is a CLG, catapult launched glider.

F1N is for HLG models, hand launched gliders. Plent of plans available for either in the plans gallery, I was looking for a "simple" balsa model and settled eventually on the Upstart 4 by Mark Drela.

Still not built though...

How high is the ceiling where you are flying? Designs for category I are very different than for category IV. Category I is under 8 meters, caegory IV is over 30. I suspect that the "flapper" models, such as the Upstart 4, are much trickier than models without flaps. I think many designs for category IV are for discus launch, and that simpler designs might be found for categories II and III.

The Supersweep and Fluf Duf on Outerzone might be interesting. Or not. I've flown ff catapult launch outdoors, but not ff hlg indoors. Strangely enough, I've flown indoor rc hlg on one occasion in a hangar while waiting for the rain to stop outside. I don't think any of us damaged our 1.5 meter models doing that, which is kind of amazing. On the other hand, that was some time ago and I may be forgetting the inconvenient parts.
