Title: Hawker Fury profile model
Post by: 9600baud on Mar 15, 2026, 03:02 PM
Hi all,

I'm currently building a profile model of the Hawker Fury, one of my favorite airplanes. I'm using the plan by John Blankenship on outerzone as a base. (https://outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=7140)

It's made out of 1.5mm and 3.5 mm foam and I hope to keep the weight under 9 g, so that 1/16" of rubber should be sufficient.

Cheers,
Alex

This is very cool!  I love the non-traditional materials and it looks amazing so far.

Here is some progress on the Fury.

So right now 8.8 g without rubber, I'm quite happy with that. Also with the looks.
Tomorrow is our evening at the gym, so fingers crossed.

Cheers

Hope that flies as well as it looks Alex - very neat. I wonder how it would go with supercap power?

So, the first trimming session did not go so well, as can be seen in the video.

After that I tried to enlarge the vertical stabiliser, but that alone did not help much. I thought maybe it's generating too much lift from the very pronounced airfoil. I took the upper wing off and flattened it as much as I could and also cut "flaps" into the lower wing.

That made it better and I can now say, it flew. Far from perfect, but I'm happy and I learned a bit.

Cheers
Alex

Hi Alex,

Looks promising.

Every model is different so what I am about to write may or may not be of use..

My d.H. Moth Major peanut weighs 10,3 grams without rubber, 12 grams with 2,0 mm rubber and flies quite well, over 40 seconds from a ROG.

Your model is quite lighter and has more wing area, so 3/32 might be too much.

Again try reducing the width of the rubber if you can.

We will talk in WhatsApp...

Thanks for the insights, George.
I'll try 2x1mm2 and see how it goes.
