I'd like to clean up and lube an old Wilder winder, and add a piece of angle for a shoe and try to fashion a brake. Has anyone done this? TIA
I recommend that you do not disassemble your 20:1 Wilder winder by unscrewing the disc-shaped cover and attempting to remove it. There is a very complex gear train inside that depends on precise placement of gears and tubular spacers that will likely be disturbed. It is extremely difficult to get the pieces back in their correct locations while reattaching the cover. There is just not enough clearance to be able to do this easily. I spent lots of time reassembling my 20:1 Wilder winder. The only reason I was able to do this is because I slightly opened the cover on a second 20:1 Wilder winder and was able to determine the location of all the gears and spacers.
Sadly, Bob Wilder has recently passed away.

Thanks for the advice, but I'd already gone in. I was able to get the cover off safely and keep all the gears and spacers in place. I've fashioned a shoe from sheet aluminum to anchor the winder at the end of a board, using longer screws through the back plate. Figuring to attach a torque meter for a stooge along the board. I'm new to this. Glad to find this forum working again. Cheers!
