Lovely conditions for the final BMFA FF scale meeting of the year, held at Buckminster on the back of the SAM35 event.
7 of os partook, which meant 10 models as double entries were allowed.
CD was Mike Smith and he and Paul Rich judged the flights.
Andrew Hewitt's Robin was the only actual EJR design, so appropriately won the ABC Robin framed print. I'll add the full results when Mike sends them through.
Overall podium though was Bryan Lea's Monocoupe in 3rd, Phil Smith's Lacey in second and the winner was Mark Hinton. A name from the past, who used to win Peanut contests with his Dumont 14-bis. Well, he's back!
Was flying CO2 this time and won it with this VMC SE5A. He also had a Guillow's Fairchild 24 going well, which I was pleased about as I had one of my rubber ones in it too. I had 'engine trouble' with my Bleriot though and only just qualified. A really super day though.
Few more pics...
Gordon Hannah's models entertained...
the Triplane was a brave choice!
I took some video that I'll upload to YouTube at some point.
Turns out I came 3rd on the recount! Very close all round though. Viva le Fairchild! 😄
Looks a great comp in ideal conditions sorry I missed it

Was it Mark Hinton who made a co2 powered 1910 Short, a Farman type box kite ,using grass stems for longerons. If so that model has stuck in my mind since the 1980s

Could well have been- I must admit I don't remember that particular model in AM, but he said he flew with Butch Hadland and co so certainly that's the right era.
Anyway, here are Sunday's now checked and corrected results courtesy of Mike Smith.
Thanks for the coverage and pics Pete.

I may be wrong but I don't think it was Mark. I remember the model but don't recall writing about it so it was probably in the Alan Callaghan years.
Ok that was bugging me so I went looking for the article in AM. I found it - January 1982. It was indeed Alan Callaghan writing. I remembered the model but not that it was tricky to trim as without fuselage side area it tended to side slip into the ground. Still a thing of beauty though
Interesting shot of Trish holding your Gotha Bill and a youthful John Whatmore as well !!!
...sorry for the diversion !
So it was Mark! Good to see him at Buckminster; they all come back in the end.
That was a good turn out and I'm looking forward to next year. We seem to be getting used to Buckminster. If you've flown at Woodvale, BM is child's play!
