Just by way of a test, this is the rubber Storch I've been working on. Charlie Newman's basic design. The black strips on the wings are thin carbon sheet to act as shrouds to the flaps. Esaki covering and Hannah Reich is sealed in by the glazing.
PS it worked! Happy days are here again.

Nice build Bill. So separate flaps, will you be adding some droop to give some extra undercamber and lift or having them in the retracted position ?

billdennis747

I hadn't considered that Chris. Not sure what would happen so I think I'll keep it flat.

Hi Bill,

My last summer's project was a Piper Pacer - not yet finished. This was an enlargement of a 16" one I made years ago. The 16" one had moveable flaps and more or less as a joke I tried them, maybe 10-20 degrees I expect - to my surprise the model flew very well. I can't remember if they actually increased duration - but I was expected them to destroy duration with their drag.

Thanks Stephen. I may have dreamed it but did I read that the Storch ailerons are arranged to droop with the flaps? I could see that working well but I've never been after duration on scale models. No hinges - I'll just glue them on!

Yes they do droop. There's some propaganda footage the Nazis took of Skorzeny's rescue of Mussolini from a mountaintop. The Storch does a very short landing. I can't work out if they were barmy enough to film the actual event, or if it's a recreation. It's definitely Mussolini in the film though.

I recall seeing Charlie fly this at Odiham years ago - possibly it was its maiden flight and it flew well.  I have a photo somewhere.  He gave me a copy of the plan which I still have but never built one although it was on the "list".  I can't remember what he did aboutthe slats and flaps. Look forward to more pictures Bill.

I think this is the one you mean David ? from The OMFC website

Looks like there are no flaps

Hello everyone, I have been flying a Dumas Storch for years. I don't know who the designer is.
I didn't make the flaps functional, but I did make the slats functional. The balsa strips from which they are made have a ground profile, are attached to brackets made of annealed brass wire, and can thus be adjusted.
Profiled rigid flaps are attached under the rear wing. The profile is a Clark Y and the straight side faces the underside of the rear wing.
The model has great flight characteristics and, after optimizing the slat setting, it first climbs like the original and then levels off and continues to fly steadily. In addition to the photos, here is a link to a video by rubberfly showing the model in flight:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0KNeHGCtFc
