Hi Mike,

Thanks for your detailed reply. Your comments about the rubber make sense. Switching to a tension spring is definitely the safer option.
The supplier/manufacturer offers springs made of 0.25 mm spring steel. I'll order some of those and test them out.
Thanks to the photos you sent, I can roughly select the dimensions (length, diameter) that you're using.
