The mystery is solved. This from David Lovegrove. 

"It's a 'Medda Flyer', designed many, many moons ago by the late Gerry Johnson, a long-time member of the Oxford Model Flyng Club. He was a keen model flyer, indoors and out.

As you said, the model is a real oddity, having an almost negative forward flying speed! The name? Well, the Club's traditional flying site is Port Medda, innit?
