Thanks for the explanation of the paste technique. I did buy some Metylan, a few years ago, but was not sure of what to do with it! See attached photo. I got the impression that they mixed a drop of PVA into the mixture!?

Can you please tell me a source of Tengujo Kashmir paper?

I started to experiment with different lightweight tissues to cover blue foam. Lense tissue seemed promising. Under 10g/m2 IIRC. I will have to restart my experiments

The Tengujo Kashmir paper is used in archival restoration of books etc, so you may be able to find it at archival suppliers
All the best

I have plenty of 6 gsm that I am unlikely to use if someone in Australia would like to try it.

The important part of the name is Kozo, the type of fibre. There are variants on the name where the papers are similar in that they are made from Kozo fibre. Manufacturing processes may vary.

Many thanks for the tip. Already sourced it in Greece and definitely need to experiment on it..... ;D

Definitely worth trying!!

Hi Andrea
Just wanted to say thanks for the detailed info about your techniques - really interesting stuff. About Tonda using microfilm - wow! - nothing would surprise me when it comes to his models! - though I wonder if he is using OS film which is the commercially available clear film used by most F1D and other indoor duration flyers?

Look forward to learning more of your methods

I found a sample pack of Tengucho tissue that I bought from Preservation Equipment Limited a few years ago. Unfortunately, you can only purchase expensive rolls, not sheets. So, I got no further than examining them.

I post a photo for reference. This gives an idea of their porosity/translucancy. The samples are so small that I can't really do much with them. I have not even wetted them, for example.

The 1.6 and 2.0g/m^2 feel far too delicate to be of any use. The 3.0 and 5.0 feel more substantial than Condensor paper, whilst the 7.3g/m^3 feels like some kind of light Modelspan.

Very useful information

Interesting samples of very lightweight tissues. The problem with this type of tissue is how to fill the pores, this presumably gets worse the lighter the tissue is. The lightest tissue the Czechs use is 6 g/m2.

On the raw white tissue it's often difficult to see the pores, but they really stand out (as tiny holes) after painting unless they have been filled properly.

Continuing the Rieseler build, it's time for the fuselage. Nothing special except for it's smallness, this model is sizewise in between peanut and pistachio.

I managed to obtain sheets of "Conservation Kozo Shika" of 3.5g/m2 and 9.1g/m2 from a UK Fine paper supplier. Unfortunately; I could not purchase the 6g/m2 stuff in a single sheet, and my budget did not stretch to a really expensive roll.

The sheets, themselves are costly, but if succesful, should cover several peanut models.

I note  on the Zlin Z50M thread in this this forum:

https://hpa.aeromodelling.gr/index.php?topic=273.15

And in the Czech forum:

https://www.minimakety.cz/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=416&start=36

That Jirka Pavlicek is using the 6g/m2 on his fanstastic build.

I will try to follow Jirka's and Anyun's examples.

I am not anticipating using the 3.5g/m2 for open framework structures, but plan to try it to reinforce blue foam. Again, an idea from the Czech forum.

I made 4" frames for the samples and attached the tissue with Solvite Boarder Adhesive. I was supprised that both weights were more tear resistant than I anticipated. But, the fibres tend to seperate when wetted, and would not withstand much brushing. So I will airbrush a coat of "Pledge Multi-Surface Wax" to better bind the fibres before applying the sealing coats of Metylan. This is my replacement for dope.

I will keep careful note of the weight at each stage.

I have a question; does this tissue have a grain?

I did not notice one
