My trip to AWM

As foreshadowed, I went to the Australian War Memorial on Tuesday.

Rather than shrink the 75 photos I took of aeroplanes on display in the new parts of the AWM buildings I thought that it would be more helpful for me to post a link to a special folder on my OneDrive:  AWM August 2026

The new aviation hall is only half filled and it is planned to put the WWII planes built in Australia in there once they have been restored (Boomerang, Wirraway, Beaufighter, Tiger Moth, Mosquito are underway).

Other galleries have some other aviation exhibits (Spitfire is in the Desert War section) and I had just about worn out the family's tolerance.

The other great thing at the AWM is the Charles Bean Centre - massive library with all sorts of material.

I(f you want to download any of the photos - please go ahead.  BTW they are in HEIC format (i.e. iPhone native format), but there are online programs to convert these to jpeg or bmp if you need to.  Please download the heic from my folder and then fiddle around with it at your end rather than trying to do your stuff in my folder, if you get what I mean

I am not aware of the AWM having a Roland but I may be mistaken. I know it has an Albatros D.Va and a Pfalz D.XII. The Pfalz D.XII appeared at about the same time, as the Roland D.VIb. They both had all wood fuselages, the Pfalz from cross laminated strip wood and Roland from clinker planks, both being a method of building small boat hulls. Both aircraft had design flaws, the Pfalz had a weak undercarriage for its weight and the Roland often broke in half at the cockpit on heavy landing, at least that was the experience of the US Army Air Corps.

There is a kink in one of the AWM Pfalz's UC struts that made it un-airworthy which may explain why it has survived.

I have not downloaded all of your photos to check on the Pfalz but you may remember if you were able the get a good shot of it's UC.

I will have a go at posting a few of my photos tomorrow.

Fantastic.
Interesting to see a V2. Of the many which were launched to the UK only 3 did not explode. My father was a policeman and he was sent to guard one of them. I had a picture of him holding the nose cone.

You are quite right - I had a senior moment.  It is an Albatross.  You can see the name on the floor in photo 9.

I like seeing pictures of various air museums. There is always something unique at each one. I remember going to an airshow in Terrace, BC, Canada in 1970 (??) where there was a Sea Fury that put on a show. I remember the 5-bladed prop and how big it seemed.

 Regarding running across real gems; in the aviation museum in Ottawa Ontario they have a He 162 Salamander.
