Hello everyone,

I don't come on here much, but i thought I'd share a video of my build progress. Some of you may have already seen it, but for those that haven't, a few details.

Drawing done for me by Ivan Taylor. He left me with a lot of scope for how to build it. I've been able to add my own touches to the build, which I'm thoroughly enjoying.
Wingspan is just under 48" - so as near as damn it 1/10th scale.
Propulsion is rubber power.
I'll be using scale dihedral, but incorporating a gyro to assist with stability.

It probably won't be one for the purists, but hey ho, each to their own.

Currently working on the prop, spinner and hub assembly. This will feature pitch adjustment for the blades, so we can experiment with that at the trimming stage.

Great update Mark, the Hurricane is looking fantastic. Looks like you are almost ready to cover ?

It's a hugely ambitious project with Gyro, adjustable pitch prop and big too for a rubber model but given your last model was a hugely ambitious and flew I've no doubt you'll do it again.  I suspect a gyro quipped rubber model could be a first

Thanks Chris. Yeah it's certainly getting there now. I have a couple of small details to add, but yeah, it's pretty much ready to cover.

I've always been the same - i just prefer the stuff that makes my brain work, thinking about how to get around potential obstacles and coming up with solutions to make things work. I think Ivan has enjoyed seeing how I've taken his design/drawing, but added my own ideas and touches to the build. As it is in the video, it weighs in at around 230g - that's including the 2s lipo and all the electronic stuff.

The adjustable pitch prop came about after a conversation with Ivan, as we were discussing some details of the model whilst he was was looking over it. I just had to engineer how to do it! I've kept it nice and simple, but it just required some accurate, close tolerance machining work. Plus, I've made all the parts for it out of brass, so that will help very nicely in the nose as a spot of ballast.

Yes i think you're right, it will be the only rubber powered gyro equipped model in existence too.

Funny you should mention the 'other model'. It's still not trimmed, and has proven to be a real challenge. It's been damaged more times than i care to remember, and i just needed a break from it. So i repaired it and shelved it. It just needs flat calm air to get the trim dialled in. Sunday just gone was flat calm. I only had a couple of hours spare, but i headed out and started the trimming process again. Back to the beginning. I just took it nice and easy, making small adjustments and observing what the Mosquito was doing. There were plenty of areas that highlighted i needed to speak with Ivan and download the thoughts out of my brain. Final flight and it clipped my stooge and damaged the starboard wing tip 😂

But, most importantly, i learned something about the model on every flight. All of this will be put into action when i go out trimming again, and i genuinely cannot wait to get out again. 👍🏻

Fantastic model! I love the scale thickness flying surfaces. They are so characteristic of the full sized plane.

I admired the Doug MacHard plan for this reason, however the increased dihedral somewhat spoiled the effect. My Keil Kraft model definately did not capture the look of the wing at all well.

Can you explain how the wing D-boxes were constructed? I presume that ther were internal ribs.

Thank you. Yeah it's got quite some depth to the wing chord! When Ivan drew it up for me, he commented on it being the thickest airfoil section he's ever drawn, but as you say, it's needed to keep in with the character of the real aircraft.

Regards the D boxes, I used the sandwich method to create the wing ribs, then retained the front section of each rib after they were cut to size. They were then cut up and placed within the D box to give the upper sheeting some support. I also put some 1/32 balsa in between each support inside the D box for additional support. I don't think they were needed in hindsight.

That is quite an effort Mark - thanks for the video. I noticed your neat adjusters - for the Gyro Platform and the tail - very neat.

How are you adjusting the propeller pitch?

Hello John. Yes there's been some work put into it to get it to this stage. The adjusters are made out of delrin - it's light and takes a thread. The downside is you can't glue it very easily. But there's ways around that!

Simple really regards the prop pitch. It's a brass tube, within a brass tube to act as a support, then the inner brass tube sits inside a brass bush with a thread. The thread is home to a m3 grub screw, which tightens down on the brass tube passing through it.

Probably not the best description to get your head around tbh, so I'll try and upload an image.

  Not sure if John was thinking the same as me but I thought it was adjustable in the air as are some of the Indoor models. ;D

Yeah none of that mate. I could probably make something to adjust the prop pitch under power like the F1B/Wakefields, but it's more work than I can be bothered to undertake 😂
