Fuselage design

Is there some advantage to 'diamond' X-section fuselages over square or round or elliptical? It would seem that 'diamond' shapes introduce problems in wing and tail surface mounting design. Is there something in this design that is a net positive?

I agree with you  When I used to build models I'd either use a square (or squareish) fuselage or latterly a round one with the balsa wrapped round a piece of pipe.

More side area and hence visibility.  Also one shim will give both side and downthrust. I can't think of another benefit

Easily creates horizontal plane for tailplane. And JOD used them so there must be a good reason!
