Reply #225            Thur April 16 2026

Here are  four outside pics of the repaired Beaver,  ready to fly.    I will still check the balance,  and ....  put the Beaver in the table stooge,  and check some rubber motor and prop runs,  just to be sure ....

Pic #1    2477    Downthrust is good.

Pic #2    2478    Side thrust is good.

Pic #3    2479    Wrinkles from high humidity,  from a lot of rain.

Pic #4    2481    Underside view.

Possible forecast flying days are:  Fri April 17 2026  all day,  Mon April 20  all day,  Thur April 23  all day,  and Fri April 24  first thing in the morning.

The park is in full leaf flush,  and we had a lot of rain,  and the grass is growing,  and has not been cut yet !!    These are the best days  8)   for small park flying,  if the humidity  >:(   cooperates ....

In the Table Stooge

I did three motor test runs using a fresh seven inch four strand motor -  two strands  3/32" and two strands of  3/16"  rubber.

1    200 stretch winds  =  8 sec
2    200 stretch winds  =   8 sec
3    250 stretch winds  =   12 sec

I can safely stretch wind in 270 turns with this motor.    This should work as I am only trying for  ten second circular flights in the  110 yard by 130 yard Cricket Field in Jackson Park,  Windsor,  Ontario.

Pic #1     2475     Undertail lighting.

Pic #2     2485     Side thrust

Pic #3     2487     Down thrust

Pic #4     2494     Prop Spinning

Here is my theory of flight,   'guess',   as to why the plane goes left.   The left wing sits higher than the right wing  (at ninety degrees to the relative wind),  causing the left wing to have less lift than the flatter right wing.   Therefor,  the higher lift right wing flies higher in the air,  than the left wing,  causing the plane to go left.    Yes, no ?

In the Table Stooge   Test Run of Rubber Motors

Pic #1     2482     Beaver is in the Stooge for some test runs of the rubber motors.

Pic #2     2490     My  10:1  Stretch Winder

Pic #3     2492     There are 250 stretch winds on this motor.    Max safe winds is  270.

Pic #4     2494     Wind forecast for Fri April 17 2026
The best times are  8 AM sunrise to  2 PM.

Balancing the  30"  Beaver between the balance jars.

Pic #1     2499     The Beaver balances with an extra ball of clay weight on the nose,  of about one gram or so.

Pic #2     2501     Closeup of the clay weight.

Pic #3     2503     Straight on view of the wings and tail plane.

Pic #4     2508      The Beaver stops in for a visit to the balsa wood lumber supplies board,  and the rubber motor board.     She looks over the rubber selection.   She is getting pumped up for those big,  long rubber motors,  and the delirium of flight.

Ready to fly!   It really does want to fly!

Start of Flight Report  #7  of  Friday April 17 2026

Well,  that was quite the flying day yesterday for Flight Report #7 of Friday April 17 2026.    It was pretty scary first thing in the morning with fog  -  see earlier pic without the Beaver = Pic #  showing really thick fog.  I would actually get out to the park three times yesterday  -  the first for the seven flights around 10:30 AM ,  then I came back around 3:00  PM  for three finger flights - the wind was just too strong the way it gusted into the third flight,  and the last and third time out (loaded for bear again),  the Cricket guys were on the field,  so no more flights.

It has been raining a lot,  and I have really figured out the weather channel to be able to get to the main flying factors quickly -  namely wind speed and direction,  precipitation and accumulations,  and percent humidity.

Flight Report   #7  of  Friday April 17 2026

It is raining now Sat after that perfect sunny day yesterday Fri April 17 2026.   The grass was out of control yesterday,  even having grown in large clumps,  higher than the rest of the high grass.    On that third trip out,  I saw that they had started the first mowing of grass in Jackson Park,  but didn't get a lot done,  and now it is raining again today Sat.

So,  it was great to land the Beaver in high wet grass.   The water smears and water drops had to be brushed off,  not wiped off (wiping off just presses the water into the Silkspan covering).   I had brought paper towels with me,  and my portable personal fan.   Brushing off the drops of water,  was done by holding the surface to be brushed,  vertically, and I would lightly brush from top, down to the bottom only,  in the direction of gravity.  The paper towel would grab on to those water drops,  better than the adhesion of the water drops to the Silkspan,  and the drops would get dragged down and brushed right off with the downward strokes.    For the smeared-in water on the covering,  I just gently dabbed it dry with a paper towel.     I did use the fan,  but it was hard to tell if it helped at all -  the fan does not remove water droplets.

The water soluble, blue marker,  painted pin striping,  was taking a beating with all of this.    It is now way to late for a drama queen  -  it has the  park beater "experimental"  title now ...

As far as the flights went,  they all landed with a lot of turns left on the rubber.    Ten seconds prop run on the table stooge,  does not correspond to a ten second flight in real life ...  Maybe it is because the wings were wrinkled from the humidity,  causing less lift.   The model did seem to climb,  on power burst flying out.   More testing is needed.

Pic #1     2528     The trees are leafing out Jackson Park.
Pic #2     2529     The old Magnolia trees are past their prime.
Pic #3     2530     The Sunken Flower Gardens are in full bloom.
Pic #4     2531     Deep wet grass by the Spitfire and Hurricane replicas.

Seven Flights  stretch wound   all launched into the wind

1     170 winds  deep wet grass  tissue is wrinkled    3 sec  slight turn right descending    lots of winds were left on the motor.

Here is where I started using paper towels to brush off the water drops downward direction only.   It pulled the drops off quite well.

2     200 Aim more left   4 sec straight  pic

3     220  5 sec  angled up on launch going out.   came down from apex nice glidepath  under power to a nice sitting landing.

4     230   5 sec  perfect angle up   not as high as above  came down nice   sitting on LG

5     240   5 sec   same as above  but one half flip forward on  landing.

6     270    6 seconds

7     270     5 sec   There is seven seconds of wound rubber in the motor on landing still left  -  about half of the double knots.

Flight Report   #7  of  Friday April 17 2026

Pic #1     2544     The wind on the flag is too gusty.
Pic #2     2545     Really gusty -  no more flying for now.

I think I have it trimmed out,  but I have to confirm this on the next session  #8  (which I did but I lost the 19 pics).

Larger Motor and New Rear Peg

Rear Peg Plates Moved Aft 2 inches.
New more powerful longer rubber motor.

So,  after losing those 19 pics of flight report #8,  I looked at my best flights so far -  only a couple of six second flights using a 7 inch four strand,  2 strands 3/16" and 2 strands 3/32" motors,  on a prop hook to rear peg of 7 1/2".  Total cross section  0.563"

Pic #1    2576    Two new yellow rear motor peg triangular balsa supports.

Pic #2    2578    Closeup shows the new motor peg holes (moved up 5mm).

Pic #3    2580    Here are two  3/32"  balsa cutouts.

Pic #4    2581    Closeup of above

It was always landing with weak power on descent ( not enough power/lift to hold flight ).  Landing also with a lot of winds left in the fuse.

So I made up a bigger motor and moved the rear motor pigs aft by two inches.

Larger Motor and New Rear Peg

I just made a new,   9 inch four strand,   2 strands 3/16" and 2 strands 1/8" motor,  for the new prop hook to rear peg of  10 3/8".     Total cross section  0.625"

Pic #1     2585     The peg holes are drilled incrementally.

Pic #2     2587     The holes are cut out in the sides of the fuse.

Pic #3     2589      The triangular balsa peg support is fitted in the fuse.

Pic #4     2590     Closeup of the above.

Time to test it out on the table stooge.

I think this is a good move Richard. I just hope it doesn't require too much more weight to maintain CG in the same place.
All the best

Thanks for the reminder Jeremy.   It had left my mind  there for a bit.   I will balance it right now -  the balsa plates,  for the rear prop peg,  are extremely light,  so just the weight of the extra two inches of weight for four strand rubber motor,  is left to compensate for.

Get a load of this wind forecast for tomorrow morning and all day -- the humidity goes from 86%  at  6 AM to  69% by 10 AM   to 47% from noon to 8 PM  47%.

And low,  low winds speeds all day ....

Sunrise is 6:40 AM
Sunset is 8:20 PM

Balancing the Beaver

Pic #1     2598     Front View.

Pic #2     2599     That extra small blob of clay,  upon being added on top,  magically and ever so slightly,  instantaneously moved the fuse to a more horizontal attitude.

Pic #3     2600     Right rear view of the open fuse located in the stooge with the necessary new holes,  in the wooden ear planks of the stooge.

Pic #4     2602     That finger tip sized blob of gray clay is rolled into a flat pancake,  and added to the top of the cowl onto the other 5 grams of clay anti sun reflection pad.

I will  fly the Beaver tomorrow with the open fuse,  and see how it goes ....

Three runs in the table stooge
1     100 finger winds   5 sec
2     200 stretch winds   9 sec
3     230 stretch winds   10 sec
