Seeing the nose hanging out like in your last picture makes me think that it would be well worth while for you to use the rain delay to braid (or pre-tension as the Poms say) those 12"motors.

I would think that 50 turns on each half of the motor would reduce the length to less than 10"which will help keep the nose in the fuselage.
All the best

New larger motors for Flight Report  #11

Well,  the forecast changed again.  Now there is no rain in the forecast,  but the humidity goes from  89%  at 6 AM,  to  68%  by noon.    At  9 AM  winds are from East at  6mph gusting to 9 mph,  going to  7mph ENE gust 10mph  at 10 AM.  Temps are 42 deg F  to  46 deg F.

Pic #1    2709    108.35 g  All Up Weight
Pic #2    WIND FORECAST  FRI MAY 1 2026  745 AM

Jeremy,  .... not yet with the braided motors,  so hold your horses.   ;D   I have two new  12" motors which have three more inches of rubber,  33% more,  than the 9" motors I just tried out.    I got 6 seconds with the 9 inch motor.  I theoretically should get  33%  more flight time also now.    A third more of six seconds,  is two seconds,  so I should get flights now of  8  seconds.  The goal is ten second circular flights.

Hopefully,  Flight Report  #11  coming up.

New larger motors for Flight Report  #11

Oh  NO!!   We just got rained on.   Those "cloudy"  skies started to turn into marble sized sprinkle dots,  on the side walk and trail into the Park,  and then worse into light rain,  so we had to turn around suddenly,  about one fifth of the way into the park,  towards the Cricket Field.

Well,  the Lite Silkspan tissue needed a mid-life "shrinking"  from the rain water,  anyways -  should be nice and taut now.

Pic #1     2720     The Beaver got soaked by rain.

So, .... no Flight Report  #11 yet ....   I'll keep my eye out for a break in the weather though ...

Flight Report #11  of  Fri May 1 2026

New larger motors for Flight Report  #11

At noon the  rain let up,  and the wind was low,  so we ran out there again,  same day,  for the first three flights (there will be three more later, same day),  and  total soaking is three times in one day.
The wind was  6 mph from ENE  gust 11 mph   65% humidity.   We left at  12:15  and got back home at  1:08 PM,  second soaking for the Beaver.
This time we made it to the Cricket Field with no rain, and got set up,  and got in three flights before we were rained out again the second time.

That was three flights with  the 12"  two strands  3/16" plus two strands  3/32"  motor,  of cross section  0.563".

I think the extra three inched of motor seemed to give a stronger and longer power burst.    It seemed to be a stronger flight even though only  getting  5 sec and 5 sec and 5 sec for the three flights,  all with good landings in very long wet grass.

1   250 stretch winds 5 sec perfect  half flip forward on landing.

2     380    5 sec  perfect   3 pt landing.

3     450     5 sec    lots of winds left on the motor   good flight

All these flights are leaving a lot of winds left on the rubber.

After three flights,  the rain came on again with solid sprinkles,  and another second soaking,  so we went back home.   I then did change out that weak  0.563"  cross section motor,  and put in the  12"  0.625" cross section motor of two strands  3/16" plus two strands of  1/8"  rubber,  which should give me an even longer power burst.

I also have a 12"  motor under construction  pic  2726 ,  of eight strands of  3/32"  rubber  for  a total cross section of rubber of  0.75" .    So now I can bench test the  0.625" motor,  and bench test the  0.75"  motor.

Pic #1     2722     The new  12"   0.563" motor is in the Beaver now.

Pic #2     2726     Starting on  the   0.75"  cross section  8 strands of  3/32"  rubber.

First three flights of six flights.

Flight Report #11  of  Fri May 1 2026

Changed to the bigger motor just made,   0.625".

After working on the 8 strand motor,  the rain let up again,  and we scooted back out to the Cricket field and got another 3 flights using the  0.625"  motor,  that I had just put in.   Three more short flights now.

At  3:00 PM  same day Fri May 1 2026  it was  49 deg F (feels like 53 deg F),  winds blowing from WNW at  5 mph  gusting to  12 mph,   54%  humidity.
Three flights
1     350 winds  4 sec  into the wind
2     450 winds  3 sec   bad high launch
3     460  winds  5 sec  good launch     goof left turn  and flatter angle of descent
Lots of winds were also left on the rubber for these flights also.

Pic #1     2729     Beaver sitting in very high grass.

Pic #2     2730     1st flight of three  half flip forward.

Pic #3     2731     2nd flight of three   nose block popped off.

Then it rained again.   Got back at  4 PM.

Pic #4     2732     Packing up to leave   soaked by the rain again.

At least I got in six flights for Flight Report #11 using those two new motors,  while it was raining off and on.   The grass was so high I could not resist going back out,   and there were no Cricket players.

Amazingly,  the Lite Silkspan,  after those good soakings,  really did shrink down nearly drum taut,  all over,  with the old wrinkles disappearing like they never did before!

End of Flight Report #11 of Fri May 1 2026.

Eight Strand  3/32"  Motor    12" long

I am hoping that this motor will give greater lift,  and a longer sustained flight,  on the initial power burst.  All of the flights so far have had lots of turns left on the motor on landing.    So I am trying to extend the power burst time,  by adding that extra, strong rubber ...  I may have to try a  maximum  15 inch long motor,  before going down the  'braided motor'  rabbit hole,  as a last resort.

Here is the eight strand motor build first,  before the Flight Report #12 post (coming up).

Pic #1    2724    4 four loops =  8 strands

Pic #2    2760    The ends are tied off with short string.   The knots are spaced out.

Pic #3    2765      The extra rubber ends are cut off,

Pic #4    2770    Elevated set-up for tying up the motor.

Eight Strand  3/32"  Motor   12" long

Pic #1     2772     Four short pieces of white string knots are added.

Pic #2     2775     The string ends are cut off as close to the knots as possible.

Pic #3     2778     Motor with prop.

Pic #4     2781     The eight strand motor is in the beaver  Ready To Fly !!    And ready to bench test and see how the  "pull"  feels  ...

Flight Report #12   of  Sat May 2 2026

After getting rained on three times on Friday,  we still got up early,  first thing in the morning on Saturday,  before the wind was scheduled to get too high to fly.

7:00  AM   38 deg F (35)  82%   winds 4 mph from N  gust to 9
9:00  AM     70%   7 NW  gust 12

There was a lot of water in the deep grass and a lot of humidity in the air,  and a lot of wrinkles on the tissue.    On each flight I had to constantly take a lot of time,  to wipe off the balsa,  wings,  and fuse and cowl,  and nose front etc with dry paper towels.   I even used the portable black fan -  I think it helped.   What helped the most,  was setting up right on top of the artificial turf of the Cricket pitch,  where there was no soaking wet deep grass,  wafting up humidity from underneath.

The sun eventually came out and I could see it help dry the tissue faster.

Pic #1     2737     No wind on the flag at  7:30 AM

Pic #2     2738     My steps from coming out yesterday in the grass,  trodden black.

Pic #3     2739     I am holding my spinning fan at the bottom of the pic,  over the wing to try to get it dry.

Pic #4     2740     First flight    110 degree flip on landing.

Flight Report #12   of  Sat May 2 2026

six flights   0.625" motor
1     450 winds 6 sec  slight left turn   1/2 flip on soft landing.
2     450   4 sec   launched too high.
3     470   5 sec   Stayed at five feet above ground the whole way to a perfect landing  1/2 flip.
4     500   4 sec   very high launch angle   stalled and came down fast       The sun was coming out and the plane tissue was drying out over the pitch,  which has no grass evaporating.   I was also experimenting with the wind from the portable fan
5     500 winds   RECORD farthest and longest so far ...  seven  (7) seconds  straight out low,  holding flight   perfect  3 point landing.
6     500   4 sec   high launch    wind was gusting   We quit.

Pic #1     2741     High humidity and wrinkles.    That is the little rechargeable fan I bought to try out.

Pic #2     2742     My path out to grab the first flight of the Beaver plane and the deep path back -  tracks in grass have trodden black ....

Pic #3     2743     2nd flight  135 degree flip  about as soft as a flip can get.

Pic #4     2744     Another softy nose pillow,  about 75 degree flip.

We got in six flights on Flight Report #12 using up to  500  stretch winds on the stooge,  using the  12" long  0.625" motor,  two strands 3/16"  and  two strands  1/8".    I just got the first  7  second flight.   After I came back home,  I finished off the  8  strand  12"  motor of  3/32" rubber,  to try now ....

Today Sat morning.    We left the apt at 7:15 AM   did  six flights,  and got home at 9:00 AM.

At  6:49  AM  the weather was   38 deg F (feels like 35 deg F),  wind from NW at 4 mph gust 9 mph  79% humidity.

Flight Report #12   of  Sat May 2 2026

Well,   we got in some good flying over very long grass.    There are no more good flying days until three or four more days,  which means the long grass will probably get mowed in the park.   But the city sets the mower blades a little higher from the ground at the start of the season, when they can fall behind schedule with big growth.   This is the first time I saw this grass this high in 14 years!    So,  you gotta make hay while the sun is shining ....  and get in as many flights as you can.

Pic #1     2745     Dewdrops on the tips of every blade of grass.   I spent a lot of time thoroughly wiping the water off of everything with dry paper towels,  after every flight.

Pic #2     2746     Another 3 point landing,  sinking in the deep grass.

Pic #3     2747     The sun came out to help dry the tissue.

Pic #4     2748     Wrinkles are mostly gone.

Pic #1     2749     I think this was my  7  second  flight.   The Spit and Hurri are getting blocked out in the background by the new leaves.

Pic #2     2750     Another view of the  7 sec  landing.

Leaving the Cricket Field and Park pics on the way out.

Pic #3     2751    The wind was gusting,  so we packed up.   I hold the nose block in with green masking tape for the walk in and the walk out (prop still spins in the wind).

Pic #4     2752     This is standing at the North end of the Cricket Field.
