The Phantom Flash R.O.G. was designed in 1936 by Comet Models’ employee Joseph Konefes. He built the prototype at home and was flying it in the street in front of his house when a woman driving by stopped and bought it from him for 75 cents (equivalent to $17.37 in February 2026 dollars!!!).
Long story short, Bill Bishop, the president of Comet Models company, had Joe draw up the plan for this classic R.O.G. (Rise-Off-Ground) 16” span rubber powered model airplane. The Comet Models kit for this model came with 1 sheet of 1/16” thick print wood, a few 1/16” square sticks, a sawed balsa propeller blank, 2 hardwood wheels plus a hardwood nose bearing, some black tissue paper and an 11” by 17” plan - all for 10 cents.
I’ve built 2 of these models and both fly extremely well. I built a laminated “Fan” propeller for this model, which performs well and gives the model that old-timer look. I also drew the parts for this model in CAD and can provide a .dwg file and/or a .dxf file for anyone with Lightburn software used with the Sculpfun home laser cutter.
