This is a handheld catapult launched version of the 1938 Johnson outdoor chuck glider that was published in Frank Zaic's 1938 Model Aeronautics Yearbook.

This glider qualifies for the SAM (Society of Antique Modelers) outdoor catapult launched glider event, which is very similar to the AMA handheld catapult launched glider event, except that the glider design must have been published before 1951.

Use 6 to 8 pound per cubic foot "C" grain balsa for the flying surfaces and 12 to 16 pound per cubic foot "A" or 'B' grain balsa for the fuselage.

The plan shows 0.5 degrees of negative incidence on the stabilizer, which makes the glider a bit loopy during the launch phase. For greater altitude gain during the launch phase, reduce the stabilizer's negative incidence to 0.25 degrees.
