The Comet Sparky went into production in 1941 after many design changes made to Ed Lidgard’s original 32” span rubber powered Sparky. Bill Bishop, the owner of Comet Models, was concerned with the complexity of Ed’s original Sparky design, so he had Comet’s designers, including Carl Goldberg, simplify the design to reduce the time required to build the model.

The Sparky, released 1 year after the similar looking Phantom Fury’s introduction, was produced from 1941 until Comet went out of business in 1998. The cost for this kit in 1941 was 50 cents, double that of the Phantom Fury. This plan shows the non-folding propeller and the sub-fin. Sometime later in the production of this kit, Comet revised the plan and kit to eliminate the sub-fin and add a folding propeller detail view.

I built a Sparky in around 1994 and added a pop-up stabilizer dethermalizer. This model flies fine on 8 strands of 1/8” rubber on a 9.5” diameter Peck silver plastic prop, so it is a little underpowered. I need to make a 10-strand motor and see how much the extra power improves the climb. I also should carve a wood propeller which will also improve the model’s climb rate.
