In 1940 Comet Models decided to market a 32” wingspan commercial rubber powered model for just 25 cents ($5.75 in February 2026 dollars). Robert Reder, who began working for the company while still in high school in the mid 1930’s, was tasked with designing this classic model kit, called the Phantom Fury. This kit was produced by Comet from 1940 until it closed its doors in 1998, when the assets of the company were sold to Guillow’s.

To keep the kit costs down, the Phantom Fury used 1/16” square and 1/16” by 1/8” balsa sticks, which were sawed from a sheet of 1/16” thick rock-hard balsa. The landing gear legs in the kit were made from 1/8” thick balsa sheet and were simply glued onto the lower fuselage longerons, ensuring failure during even the softest of landings.

When I built my Phantom Fury from one of the last production kits, I designed a music wire landing gear sandwiched between two hard 1/16” thick bulkheads creating a landing gear assembly similar to what was done on the Comet Models Sparky, another classic rubber powered model kit.

I covered the wing’s center section, where the wing’s rubber bands cross, with 0.010” thick cardstock in lieu of Japanese tissue paper. Also, I added two 0.085” diameter round toothpicks to the fuselage for holding the wing to the fuselage with short rubber bands.
