Beaver Flight Report  #30  of  Mon July 13 2026

These last four flights had a broken strand or two.    I added some clay weight to the right wing to lessen the steep left turn,  or so I thought.

Pic #1     3985     Flight 4    It suddenly went way right!   and turning way right,  and flew through the tree trunks,  as I desperately prayed to the Gods of Free Flight,  and  it missed the trees.
Pic #2     3986     Flight 4 landing   It was a pretty rough packed gravel road for a runway,  even with large potholes.
Pic #3     3987     Good thing the Beaver was equipped with Alaskan Bush Wheels,  and bolstered up frame and landing gear fairings,   as there was no damage.
Pic #4     3988     Flight 5   200 winds  7 sec ties the best flight of the day.

Beaver Flight Report  #30  of  Mon July 13 2026

I added some clay weight to the right wing tip,  to lessen the steep left turn.   I should not have done that.

Flight 4     200 winds  OH NO !!   It went way right off the start,  and now circled right instantly,  and then flies through the line of full sized tree trunks,  to a perfect landing,  on the hard-packed grave road.    It is a good thing that the Beaver has Alaskan Bush Wheels for these off airport gravel runways and riverbeds.   ;D  ;D

I then removed that clay weight that I added,  and it now flew perfect again.

Flight 5     200  winds   7 sec !   long flight with a long final
slight left turn,  lands on the chalk line upside down.
Flight 6     200  winds  6 sec   too low of a launch   It went way far right and straight,  on the lee side of the treeline,  and does not get high enough to get up in the wind above.
Flight 7     200 winds  6 sec   nice high launch   Wow!  straight down wind    one half flip forward on landing.

It flew really well with the  0.938 motor  -  best flights were 7 sec.   Flights 4 5 6 and 7  were all with broken strands and still flew!

Pic #1     3989     Flight 5 lands on the chalk line.
Pic #2     3990     Flight 6   long and out low.
Pic #3     3991     Flight 7   nice flight with good distance.
Pic #4     3992     Flight 7 landing.

Beaver Flight Report  #31  of  Wed July 15 2026

Smashed In Nose

It was another nice and windless,  hot morning.   The Beaver had it's new 8 strand  0.875"  untried motor in.      Four strands of  3/32" rubber plus  four strands of 1/8" rubber,  nine inches long,  prop hook to rear peg is ten inches.   We just finished up with the strongest  0.938"  motor,  in Flight Report #30  six strands of 3/32" plus two strands of  3/36" rubber,   which flew well for six second flights.   So I was just getting in more flying and bashing around the Cricket Field,  finger winding and not taking any notes,  with the  0.875" motor.

I got in about 10 flights,  all about 5 or 6 seconds on 180 or 200 finger winds.

Pic #1     4016     The  0.875"  motor is now in the 30" Beaver.    RTF

Pic #2     4034     Wind on the flag at the Spit and Hurri.

Pic #3     4035     Nice flight.

Pic #4     4036     Going down,  far out.

Smashed In Nose

Pic #1     4045     Steep left turn.

Pic #2     4046     Another landing.

Pic #3     4047     The Beaver hit the leafy edge end of the branch,   and dropped straight down into the ground with the weighted nose first,  and winds left on the prop,  so it must have accelerated downwards more so   -   that was the second nose dive plummet,  after hitting the branches today.

Pic #4     4048     Those maple keys on the ground were knocked out of the tree branch tip.    The other flight that hit the trees,  knocked off leaves.

Smashed In Nose

Pic #1     4049     The prop blade edge is buried into the front of the cowl side.   The circular white plastic plate,  housing the thrust button,  is completely broken off from the cowl,  along that circle perimeter,   and smashed inwards.

Pic #2     4050     Another view of the damage.

We went home to lick our wounds.

Now to the repairs,  which I have been steadily working on in the meantime  ....  I think it will fly again ....

Beaver Repairs

Smashed In Nose

The prop blade edge is buried into the front of the white plastic cowl side.   The circular white plastic plate,  housing the thrust button,  is completely broken off from the cowl,  along that circle perimeter,   and smashed inwards.  That round plate with the hole for the thrust button housing,  and on which sits the painted paper radial engine,  that plate part broke off evenly from the white plastic cowl,  right along its outer circle edge.    It seemed to break off there,  like the plastic was fatigued,  and that plate itself has a big crack in it.   Also that white plastic thrust button housing, has a bigger crack in it too.

So ... ,  I dissolved the whole cowl assembly and all of the white glue in hot water,  and here are the parts I got dissolved.

Pic #1     4052     Here are the parts after dissolving the white glue with hot water.

Pic #2     4054     Figuring out the balsa Cowl Assembly.

Pic #3     4055     There is a big crack in the plate holding the thrust button housing,  and up the side of the thrust button housing.

Pic #4     4056     You can see the crack,  which has widened,  on the back side of the thrust button housing.   There is a lot of white glue build up on the mounting plate wall in the upper left.

Smashed In Nose

Pic #1     4061     I cleaned up the balsa as best I could.

Pic #2     4062     I figured out how to put the nose block assembly together.

Pic #3     4066     Blocking up all of the parts for white gluing.

Pic #4     4067     Making up new plastic circle plates out of  0.014"  thick plastic sheet.

Smashed In Nose

Pic #1     4069     More progress gluing up the balsa parts,  and new plastic circle plates,  including one of  0.0225" thickness.

Pic #2     4072     Close up.   The lower left is the  0.012"  plastic ring that broke off,  and it has the blue engine glued on the back.   There is also a crack in this ring -  it will be glued flat onto the bigger rings.

Pic #3     4073     You can see the crack in the ring at the lower left in this pic.   I the pic at the upper right,  I had to slice out a small piece of lead clay weight in the nose cowl,  to make room for fitting the big rings.   The inside front of the Cowl ring hole,  also has a crack in the white plastic,  where the prop blade got buried.

Pic #4     4076     More progress on gluing up the balsa parts little by little.   The tenon box fits quite well.
