Bench Testing the   8 strand  3/32"  motor

Pic #1     2785     M and B haul out the table stooge and set it down on the work table.

Pic #2     2788     Bloodroot and Mandrake place the Beaver on the table Stooge.

Pic #3     2791     M & B slide in the  3/64"  pin.

Pic #4     2797     View from the other side.

I tested 5 different numbers of winds,  safely up to 340 winds.

Results

No of Stretch Winds  =  seconds of prop spin
230  =  8
270  =  10
300  =  11
330  =  14
340  =  13

There are some water damaged logos and maple leafs and striped strips and the engine,  that will get fixed up now too.

Ready to fly.

Pic #1    2800    A lot of those marker colors dissolved and ran,  from the rainwater.

Pic #2    2803    I have a bunch of extra pin-striped strips ready also.

Pic #3    2806    These cutouts are ready to glue using
Studio  Gluestick.

Pic #4    2809      Roundels,  striped strips,  red maple leafs,  and the engine flat  have all been re-glued.

Ready to fly ....    8)    She will look better in the air now ...

The Gods of Free Flight giveth,  and the Gods of Free Flight taketh.

Here is a poem from our Hangar,  narrated by Bloodroot,  to the Gods of Free Flight.

PSALM OF THE BALSA MODELER/BLOGGER  (no discomfort intended)

The balsa modelling website is my Shepherd.
There were many to learn from.
They give me build threads and blogs,
And Aviation History galore.
They make me fly in green pastures of high grass
and low wind conditions.
They restoreth my free flight modelling soul,
and guide me in the paths of Theory of Flight,
especially for rubber powered balsa models.

Yeah,  though I build through
The bumptious and harrowing,
Nuisance thread killers, site killers,
And  naysayers,
I shall fear no intruders.
For the moderators are with me.
And Bloodroot and Mandrake,
They comfort me.

Thou preparest a building board and flying forum before me,
In the presence of site distraction adversaries.
Thou givest us  'Kudos'  and  'Ignore'  buttons, usually.
My building board,  and build threads,  and Flight Reports runneth over,
Surely long flights and soft landings shall follow me,
For the rest of my Free Flight,  Rubber Powered,
Balsa Model,  flying days of my life.
And I will dwell in the Interweb's Aviation Modelling World,  for ever.   And ever.

Flight Report #13  of Tues May 5 2026    4 PM to 6 PM

At  4 PM in the afternoon,  it looked calm out now,  but earlier I could see that the gusts were really blowing the big tree branches aboot.    I checked the weather,  started packing up,  and out we went.

At  4:30 PM  the temp was 57 deg F (feels like 55)  64% humidity,  winds at 9 mph from WSW gusting to  18 mph.

Pic #1    2810    Wind on the flag at the Entrance to Jackson Park.

Pic #2    2811    Wind on the flag at the Spit and Hurri replicas.

Pic #3    2812    They looked like Giant Puffball mushrooms in the deep grass from far away  -  edibility is "choice" -  in the Cricket Field.    But they were not spherical.  I think they were Abruptly-bulbous Agaricus,  Agaricus abruptibulbus,  edibility is:  choice with caution.

Pic #4    2813    The City only mowed two circle strip paths of grass,  and painted the white lines only,  in the Cricket Field.

Flight Report #13    of Tues May 5 2026    4 PM to 6 PM

Pic #1     2814     Another pic of the grass cut and the white line.

Pic #2     2815     My stooge setup.

Pic #3     2816     First flight of the day  10  seconds!!   I finally succeeded!

Pic #4     2817     The ten second flight landing.

six flights   twelve inch 8 strand 3/32" motor

1     400 stretch winds  10 sec   perfect flight  straight out  nice and slow flight at the end,  with only 5 sec of rubber run at the end.

2     450     6 sec   launch was too high into the wind.

3     450     5 sec  low perfect left circle   try a better launch next time.

4     450     9 sec   flight was up high just right   made a left turn and a half circle.

5     450     5 sec   nice flight but too much headwind gust.

6     450     13 sec  our longest flight yet !!    I sent it all along the tree line,  to go left,  which it did,  and had a long slow shallow glide at the end.

I tried to stretch wind for flight number 7,  but the   10:1  winder broke,  and I then noticed one of the loops of rubber had  also broke.    I will tie up a new motor.

It was too gusty with the wind now  (I did have my spare  15:1  winder with me though),  but we quit anyway and got back home at  6:10 PM    58 deg F (54),  55% humidity,   winds blowing  9 mph  from the West gusting to  15 mph.

Pic #1     2818     The next flight landing in thick tall grass.

Pic #2     2819     13  Thirteen second flight !!!   The longest flight yet!!!    I tried launching,  just left of the headwind,  along the tree line,  to get out of the wind,  and have the Beaver turn left,  which turned into a long low extended glide,  on the final wind down of the prop.

Pic #3     2820     Closer look at the 13 sec flight landing.

Pic #1     2822     I launched this  13 sec  flight from way off to the left of my set up.

I was winding for flight 7,  when the  10:1  winder broke the plastic,  and one loop of the rubber broke at the front of the motor.

Two New Motors

After breaking my  10:1  winder and the 12" motor,  in Flight Report #13 above,  I decided to try another 12"  motor again,  as it gave me the best  13 sec flight so far.

Well,  I decided to make another  12  inch motor,   and while I was at it,  I also made a motor of  15 inches,  for prop hook to rear peg of 10"  -   the maximum usable (? or something like that) motor length,   is  1.5  times the prop hook to rear peg length,  of 10".

Both motors are  8 strands (4 loops)  of  3/32" rubber.

12 Inch Motor

Pic #1     2832     The loop is broken at nose of the motor.

Pic #2     2835     Trying to triple knot the loops to the same length.

Pic #3     2839     Ends carefully cut off.

Pic #4     2842     Small pieces of string to tie up the motor.

Two New Motors

12 Inch Motor  cont

Pic #1     2844     Tied up.

Pic #2     2846     There is an extra  10"  of string tied to the front of the motor.

Large  15 Inch Motor Motor

Pic #3     2851     About an extra  1 1/2" of extra rubber is needed on the strand ends,  in order to tie up the motor strands.

Pic #4     2855     Ends are tied off on the  15"  motor.

Flight Report #14  of   Wed May 6 2026

I had big plans with the new  12"  motor.

At  1:30 PM  it was 54 deg F (58),  47 per cent humidity,  winds 7 mph from the South,  gusting to 12  mph.

Flight #1  was 6 sec ,  and flight #2 instantly veered right (maybe it broke a strand).    I was launching it along the tree line hoping that it would go left.   It sailed right into that tree line under a lot of power,  hitting high on the main trunk (which busted off a big piece of the front fuse),  and then it went straight down into the ground,  left wing tip first straight into the ground,  falling with all of its weight,  and smashing the wingtip pretty good.

On our way to the Cricket Field ...

Pic #1     2868     Wind at the Spit and Hurri.

Pic #2     2869     Still heavy snow on the Cricket Field.

Pic #3     2870     Broken left wing tip.

Pic #4     2871     Broken nose.

Flight Report #14  of   Wed May 6 2026

Started at  1:30 PM  and going back home at  2:00 PM with a smashed up Beaver.

Pic #1     2872     Going back home.

Well,  I worked on it all evening and all night because the weather wind forecast was good.

Pic #2     2873     The top section of the fuse is glued back in its place.   And two infill planks are now glued on the top of the front fuse.

Pic #3     2874     Closeup.

Pic #4     2876     M and B have two infill planks fitted,  and ready to glue,  at the lower left.

Flight Report #15  of   Thur May 7 2026

Made another 12"  motor and worked all night gluing up the Beaver repairs.

Pic #1     2878     Wind on the flag entering Jackson Park on the way to the Cricket Field.   The Dawn Redwood leaf flush is out.    First thing in the morning.

Pic #2     2879     Quick stop for a wind pic at the Spit and Hurri.

Pic #3     2880     On the Cricket Pitch,  no players,   look at that deep grass.

Pic #4     2881     Soft  110 degree nose flip -  no fear of crashes ....

Five Flights   12" motor  8 strands  3/32"  15:1  Winder

1     270 winds,  5 sec  left turn  perfect half circle   lots of wrinkles on the tissue
2     315     7 sec   high launch into almost no wind.
3     345    5 sec   into slight wind   no penetration enough,  but nice flight.

I have been having to wipe off a lot of microdots of water forming right out of the air,  on the Silkspan from the humidity.

4     345    3 sec hard left  -  bad launch?   added a bit more clay to the right wingtip.
5     345    4 sec   nice left turn -  needs a little bit higher launch

It was a Broken Strand.   That is all  -  just five flights.
