Just curious, Richard

Are the reports coming out 7 days after the flying?

Cheers

Thur May 14 2026        30 inch Beaver

Hi Jeremy.  In the last 12 days,  I had six flight reports and a lot of pics and text to edit,  and a lot of motors to build and test,  and a lot of repairs to do.  Plus I had to wait for all of the threadkiller slop to clear out,  from flooding the Recent Topics board.  But I am caught up now.  Plus I had a death in the family.

Jeremy,  are you building and flying anything?

Two New Motors and Bench Testing

After Flight Report #16,  I still have the  15"  motor  8 strands of  3/32" rubber,  to try out yet.

I don't think that there is enough pull with the  0.75"  total cross section rubber motors.    So I made up an even stronger motor to try.

I made up and bench tested two new motors,   9"  and 12",  of  total cross section of  0.813",   the strongest motor yet.   Prop hook to rear peg is  10".

Pic #1     2909     I made the bottom one in 9" and 12".

Pic #2     2912     9"  eight strand motor.

Pic #3     2918     Here is the new  12"  motor.

Pic #4     2922     And bench testing in my table stooge.

Bench Test Results

9" motor      80 to 100 finger winds = 3 1/2  to 4  1/2 sec.
9" motor  stretch winds 15 x 15   225 = 6 sec,  225 = 7 sec
15:1 winder

12" motor    20 winds x 15 =  300 turns =  11 sec,  10 sec

I went straight to the 12"  motor,   and used it in Flight Report #17  I just had,  first thing after sunrise this morning,  today on Friday May 15 2026.

Flight Report # 17  of  Fri May 15 2026

We got up early,  to try and get some flights in before the Cricket players show up.

Pic #1     2923

The wind was only going to be good from sunrise at  6:11 AM  blowing  2mph from SW gust 4 mph  79% humidity (a big factor),  winds good until 9:00 AM when the wind becomes too strong  5 mph SW gust 9 mph 62% humidity.

Pic #2     WIND FORECAST   FRI MAY 15 2025   5 AM

Pic #3     2925      Morning sunlight pic of the Beaver on the table  RTF  Ready To Fly  (I'm spelling out the acronym for Jeremy because he needs to start doing it   ::)     ).

Pic #4     2929     Wind on the flag at the Spit and Hurri replicas   Dead Calm.

Flight Report # 17  of  Fri May 15 2026

We got in 14 stretch wounds flights.

Pic #1     2930     First flight  10  sec

Pic #2     2931     In the stooge (I am looking East towards the sun rising).

Pic #3     2932     Closeup   motor is 8 strands 12" long of 6 strands  3/32"  and  two strands  1/8".     I left the opening in the covering at the rear fuse sides,  so that I can access the rubber motor wrapped around that  1/8" aluminum tube rear peg,  and push that rubber back into the middle of the rear peg before flight.     The Beaver is just a utility plane to experiment with now -  no more Beauty Queen.

Pic #4     2933     Second Flight  7 sec.

Fourteen Flights of Flight Report # 17   stretch wound

First seven of fourteen flights.

1     360 winds  10 sec  perfect flight nice left turn  1/2 flip on landing.
2     375  winds  7 sec  low downward point on launch  nice left turn  1/2 flip
3     405   winds  8 sec  straight out   no left turn  pic of wet grass all around the wheels.
4     420    winds  7 sec   left turn   lots of dew evaporating   tissue is sagging and drooping.
5     420    winds  4 sec   way too high bad launch    good thing for long grass to cushion the stall and dive.
6     405     5 sec  bad launch   flew right low over the ground    held horizontal flight.
7     405     8 sec   big left turn   almost landed on the artificial turf pitch.

Flight Report # 17  of  Fri May 15 2026

Pic #1  2934  Drying off the Beaver  -  paper towel.

Pic #2  2935  The grass depth after one mowing was still good for soft landings.   The wheels hit a clump of grass.   I had to blow off the wet grass,  and sponge towel the Alaskan Bush wheels,  that were soaking up the water,  even though the bush wheels were made from a kid's kick splash board for the pool ....

Pic #3  2936  Loaded into the stooge  ready to stretch wind.

Pic #4  2937  Flight 7  -  this one almost landed on the artificial pitch -  I was hoping to see the Alaskan Bush Wheel performance,  landing on this off airport strip.

The humidity is now starting to go down.

Last seven of fourteen flights.

8    405    5 sec  nice flight left but descending
9    405    9 sec  long flight    the wind kept it straight.

The sun is starting to come out,  and the breeze is starting to pick up.

10    390  9 sec  high big left turn  nice flight.
11    405  8 sec  pic in flight and on ground
12    405  5 sec  bad launch  pic just after hitting the ground.
13    405    7 sec  pic  low left.
14    405    10 sec  good height  held straight by wind coming from the  left.

The wind was gusting too much now,  so we quit.    But it was an all time great flight session in long grass!!    And no damage to the Beaver!

Well,  it was getting gusty,  so we quit after 14 flights.   And I finally got some picture proof of the Beaver actually flying.

Pic #1     2946     Packed up and heading home,   and thanking the Gods of Free Flight.   No damage!   Well,  ...  just a couple of cracked stringers from grabbing/gripping  the model - still flyable though ...

Pic #2     2947     Horse Chestnut tree in full flower of erect panicles that are 8 to 12 inches long.

Pic #3     2948     The wind is now gusting at the Spit and Hurri.

Pic #4     2949     And the side view.
